From county prison to hotel

The Clarion Collection Hotel Bilan has a long and exciting history. It was built in the mid-1800s and until 1968 it was used as a prison. The cellar is home to a fascinating prison museum and the updated rooms feature anecdotes from former inmates. Several of Sweden's most notorious criminals have been incarcerated here, with Raskenstam as the most famous "guest". Despite the metre-thick walls, there were quite a few escapees. The most common method is said to have been the old classic, using a file to make a tunnel and bed sheets as ropes.
